Here's the whole enchilada :>)...Just about any salad greens will do
well.As to Mexican - you can grow cilantro, epazote, tomatoes and
peppers (green, red, rainbow and jalapeņo).How's that for starters?

Has anyone tried Azolla as a fish feed?
Aloha,

Wow that was a fast reply...Thanks Barry,
I'm at the beginning stage of setting up a small scale trout
and lettuce experimental lab up here in Quebec. The system is a raft one
using0.3 square feet of growing area per gallon of fish water ( I
actually am goingby the amount of feed put in to the system w/r to
growing space ). I'm at theviscous circle stage trying to get things
started, I 'm hoping to be able toremove my biofilter once the plant
roots are established. Getting back to theoriginal question; I'm slowly
increasing the nutrient content of the system withhydroponic liquid
fertilizers to have enough for the plants which , onceestablished can
then help with the biofiltration .( Am I wrong in doing so, Iread that
small leafy plants need an EC of 400 to start and ~2000 onceestablished
).

You are on the right track in relating fish food input to hydroponic
system load sizing. The amount of feed used will determine the nutrient
input to the plants. Achieving waste production/nutrient uptake
equilibrium is a delicate balancing act. For a rather detailed study of
the relationship between tilapia biomass and growth to lettuce growth and
nutrient uptake try to get a copy of the following paper. Nutrient
Dynamics in Integrated Aquaculture-Hydroponics Systems, by Damon E.
Seawright, Robert R. Stickney, Richard B. Walker. Aquaculture, Jan 30
1998, vol 160, pp215-237. Publ by Elsevier, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Accession # IND21977719, Nal Call # SH1.A6, ISSN 0044-8486. This study
looked at nutrient dynamics for individual macro and micronutrients in a
closed recirculating system. You may be able to obtain a copy of this
through interlibrary loan. If not contact me off list. Good luck with
your endeavors.

Exactly what do tilapia ordinarily eat?I don't mean pre-mixed, purchased
feeds.I mean, what would they eat if living wild? And/or, what's in the
pre-mixed, purchased fish feed?
