Hello Melvin:

Thanks for your e-mail.
Hope you have success with your new greenhouse. Tell me more about your
project.
I'm 60, and so, too old for Carnival. I stay at home, studying and resting.
Got three messages from the Aquaponics List.
Really, as you said, may be people is out for work.

Best regards

The crystals, magnets, and astrological work-up experiments will come later, but first lets talk about light and fish. ;-) To clarify my questions and to satisfy your curiosity, I'll briefly run through my silly hypothesis. The hatchery where I'm interning is home to 200 broodstock King Croaker or White seabass, (Sciaenidae Family Croakers and Drums "Atractoscion, nobilis." This species is the largest of the 9-drum species along the California coast. Our largest weigh 90-pounds. That's where the king croaker name comes from, and I guess white seabass was their common name in the fish markets. Annually, we produce millions of juveniles for enhancement and experimental culture. A few waves of virus-caused catastrophic losses aside, our biggest problem is cannibalism. My experiment will compare larval success/behavior/growth under different colors and intensities of light. Here's why this experiment may show differences. Salt water, plankton, detritus, and dissolved compounds in the natural larval habitat absorb red and blue wavelengths. In the hatchery, we use white light, usually mimicking day light: full spectrum with a little extra red. Our larval culture tanks are crystal clear recirculating and shallow, not filtering much blue or red wavelengths. Perhaps the reds and blues are artificially stimulating anti-social behavior. Those of you who've spent time in jail know that prisons are usually painted in various shades of pink. Some prisons even require the inmates to wear pink underwear. The inmates are less violent, and more manageable. Similarly, the poultry industry doesn't use white light in their growout operations. They find that the birds are calmer and grow faster under blue light when young, and under green light as they grow older. That's my basic reasoning behind the experiment. I cannot go on about retinal melatonin production affecting somatic neurotransmitter levels via the pineal and superchiasm because I'm still gathering literature and anecdotes. Tell me your stories on light color and fish behavior/growth/success. For those of you not familiar, ATTRA (Appropriate Technology Transfer to Rural Areas) is a wonderful resource. Although I believe written materials are still limited to those in the U.S., many resources are available now on-line at their web site. It will be located next to a major highway for advertisement. We have had many people asking us about this size greenhouse, so, we decided to put together a kit. I am going to advertise it on the internet. Greenhouses are getting to be more and more popular with gardeners here in the U.S.. Who knows, maybe some day it will not be uncommon for the average gardener to raise vegetables and fish in their own greenhouse. The members of the Aquaponics List may be laying the foundation for a new way of gardening. melvin landers >
