Hello,

I am new to the list. I live in Alton, IL and would
like to know if there is anyone close to me that has a
greenhouse that I could visit. I want to build one
and get started growing and selling.

Erma

Erma,
The Byron High School in Byron, Illinois has an excellent aquaponics program
with 10 tanks totaling over 10,000 gallons of fish production and numerous
types of plant grow beds attached. I don't know how far Alton is from Byron
but, I believe if you contact the High School, you can go there to see
aquaponics in action.

Hi-
I'm new to the group. I heard about Tom & Paula
several years ago at my previous employment
(educational systems design).
We're thinking of setting up a family-size system
(we have a large extended family). We're organic
gardeners and have 3 1/2 acres with a well.
As a former vegetarian, my hardest decisions about
aquaponics has been how I would be able to kill
the fish in a manner I can accept. I heard about a
high school moonbase project that put caught fish
into icy water. The fishes' metabolisms slowed
down to the point they "went to sleep" and could
be beheaded with a minimum of trauma (for all concerned!).
Has anyone tried this? How did it work? What other
methods are being used?

An additional note: is anyone here in the San
Diego area that I could see your set-up?
Cat, in Escondido CA

I have used the Iki Jime method and been satisfied with the results. See
the following web page.
http://www.nafc.ac.uk/publish/note1/note1.htm

"The Iki Jime Method

Iki Jime harvesting involves the insertion of a spike quickly and directly
into the brain thereby causing immediate brain death.
The fish immediately cease all motion. The gill is then cut and the fish
placed in seawater to bleed. As the heart of the fish
remains pumping for a short time bleeding proceeds as effectively as the
standard method."

It is used commercially for salmon but I have found it to work well with
Tilapia. This method pacifies the fish quickly. I use an ice pick to spike
the brain, this also holds the fish still while I cut the gills. Dropping
the fish into an ice water bath then allows them to bled out while they
die. The chilling in the ice water also allows one to begin the cleaning
operation more quickly.

I'm trying to design a 12 volt pump system powered by solar energy. Does =
anyone know where I can get a 12 volt timer to run the pump cycles?
Thanks in adance.

12 volt timers are used by the alarm industry and very reasonable...

This mail speaks to the Aquap set-up at Byron High School,,,,I am new at
this, and
would very much like a description of the set-up if I knew their address,,,I
have seen
only the USVirgin Isl set-up and it was described so well,,,I would surely
appreciate
knowing about smaller working systems,,, thanks Jason
