Hi Paula , I have never tried to E-mail Attie directly.

My biofilter is upline from my rafts and my water is not murky at all , and
I have minimum sludge in bottom of 9 inch raceways ; around 1/16 of an inch
per 2 weeks .
I checked my nitrate last weekend and it is / was at 428 ppm , nitrite at
0.5 ppm finally. I think that denitrification was happening ; I added quite
a bit of oyster shells over my biofilter and this may have caused anaerobic
spots here and there so I stirred things up a bit at the surface and my
nitrite fell. This can be a coinsidence but seems to make sense. I have been
bringing up my alkalinity with dolomite and this should help my bacteria. I
added NaCO3 the other in a desperate attempt to bring up my alkalinity ; I
think I may have added a little too much because my lettuce is all wilting
and is very pale.
Do you think there is a market for yellow-whitish Boston lettuce ? hehehe
Can a plant recover from a sodium shock or is it doomed ?
