Hello,

When I came into work this morning, a news crew from a local

station was interviewing my boss (the head of the Genetics Department here

at UW). The reporter was talking to my boss and said that he was talking to

the head of Ag Economics who compared the significance genetically altered

crops to the [drum fill] industrial revolution. I thought "what a load of

crap" and supressed my urge to giggle. When I talked to Mike (my boss)

about it later and said that the comparison seemed histrionic to me, he

said "Let them believe that. Maybe we can get more funding that way."

The most successful deceptions are based on being passive about

ignorance. Geneticists don't have to do anything to seem important. We can

just let the ag people, the medical people, the journalists and others do

the exadurating for us. I guess if someone called me one of the most

important people in the world, I wouldn't tell him that he is mistaken,

either...

BTW, I hear that aquaponics will change the world. It will be the

most important invention since the plow...

Why not? Is there something about the water that makes you think this might

not be a good idea?

Okay.. It'll arrive in your box in a minute.

btw; a quick note to all - I've found the pop bottle digester plans which

I told people that I couldn't find, so if anybody requested it and I

didn't reply with it, please resend your request, and hopefully I'll be

able to send it to you now.

Some studies indicate that Red Claw crayfish might suppress the growth of

tilapia in polyculture systems. Don't know about Yabbies.

No, I just remember somebody advising someone else against it because of

the high-protein meat feeds that I/they feed them. I feed my little

crayfish (they're called yabbies in Australia and are about the same size

as prawns which you buy from the supermarket) steak, liver, worms and

sometimes properly brought feed.

I was wondering - does anybody Australian on this list know if you can

feed these yabbies anything other than meats. Do they eat plant material?

Michael

Crayfish or yabbies do not need meat as a protein source in their diet.

They are in

fact detrital feeders, i.e. they eat decaying vegetable matter and a wide

variety of

vegetables. The vegetables are best if cooked first, detrital

microorganisms can

then invade them quicker. Yabbies and crays only need about 15% protein in

their

diet and they can get this quite satisfactorally from the detrital

microorganisms

and zooplankton growing on the rotting vegetable matter.

Some commercial yabbie growers in Victoria have a system where after

draining the

ponds for harvesting, the ponds are left for a while to dry out a bit and

then the

base of the pond is planted with a cereal grass such as rye which does not

mind wet

soil. When the grass is about 200mm high the pond is flooded and the grass

starts

to break down. When the breakdown is progressing the yabbies are then

introduced and

the decaying grass provides sufficient food for their growout period.

Perhaps you

can adjust this idea for your system.

Lets know how you get on

Vivienne

I'd much appreciate the pop-bottle digester plans. And, many thanks for

sending the other biogas materials. Very interestings.

Best wishes,
