Hi folks...

Its been a long time recovering from my car accident. To all who wrote

me off line Thanks!! Is Uwe off for summer, or how are you coping

compadre? My back still hurts sometimes, but Im fine generally..

For those who need figures in diagrams and always gladly FREE...

check this out for greenhouse plans with BOM and measurements...

http://forums.cosmoaccess.net/forum/survival/prep/green.htm

To Bagelhole.... there is no rush to Aquaponics, (listen to these

people..!!, theyre good folks... :) ) and hey, ( without getting

religious here, If there is a GOD, I dont think he would cause us to

starve out over some dumb mistake we did, programming our computer chips

wrong, ) prepare man , but dont panic, (first rule). Nature (AND

CERTAINLY NOT AQUAPONICS) cannot be rushed...(after all, the Almighty is

the Master Aquaponiker, who created the all those little itsy bitsy

microorganisms down to the microscopic level for these complex

biosystems to regulate itself. And hey, wouldnt it be great to just

pull the plug and start all over, a la little house and the prairie?

Let me quit joking.. if you need answers NOW.. start with the

agricultural extension offices, down to your worms and crickets (which I

do too) check out

http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/scripts/htmlgen.exe?MENU_FA

there are many other such pages on most extension sites... where this

group really fires is when you ask really specific questions.. (Ive been

there..)

Ive downloaded tons of PDF files from other sites too, so just plug in

extensiion offices in a search and look what comes up!!

THAT was to me the fastest way to start up in terms of documentation.

When you are setup, youll find many will help to fine tune your

operation answering your specific question.. Dont feel daunted by the

response level, each group has its pulse...

Good luck with your systems...

Welcome aboard..

Mike.

Paula, Please remove my name at least for now from your list serv. I may

try it again when I get back to school as it may be a good reference for

students when looking for info on a topic.

Thanks,

Bruce

David,

Nice list of plans. Here's another list:

http://www.h2othouse.com/html/plans.html

Be sure to look at the ones from Mississippi if you want larger

greenhouses. The Victorian model is beautiful too.

Dear Mike,

thanks for your amusing and helpful e-mail. I got a lot of good

info from the url you posted. Though I thing God (or the stars) would do a

thing like y2k because of its heavy irony. Though people can survive under

the most horrific conditions (Yugoslavia, Ruanda, etc), I still feel

compelled to be getting this ready for 1/1/2000.

I agree, that panic is never a good response. One of my motto's is no

matter what, don't panic! Now, I am deeply committed to building this thing,

having gone into it with way too little knowledge, thinking idiotically, that

if might be simple. But there is no turning back now. I'm hoping I can find a

decent solar pump that will be strong enough to pump the fishwater through

about 20 6 and 1/2' 1/2" tubes all connected to the plants (vertical) and

back into the fishwater. Buy the heavy plastic to cover the trenches. And

then buy the tilapia soon enough to grow them big enough to eat by 2000. I am

good with pressure and stress, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

                                                                Fishfried,

Tom,

A little stress to move plans along is good but chaos is not. You can

always phase in your plans to avoid it:

Phase 1 - hydroponic production beds. Quickest may be the dishpan

system shown in last month's growing edge. Then you could be assured of

having food on the table on 1/1/2000.

Phase 2 - integrate the fish component, upgrade growing system to gravel

beds.

This is not simple but it's fun, once you get the bug you just have to

keep on going.

Dear Adriana,

Always appreciate your generous comments. I have just finished

shoring up the sides and middle walkway for the fish, about 22'x 7' with a 2'

middle walkway that spans the raceway/trench (from 2' to 3' deep) and the

framing with glass door at each end. Over is bent conduit (found in the

street) every 3 or so feet attached to the back fence. I need to round the

corners of the trench, and slant the floor to the lowpoint where the solar

pump and battery will go.

Have contrived a vertical growing scheme out of 2 liter plastic pop

bottles, cut off at the ends and stuck together with the bottle necks to the

bottom. To hold it upright have fastened 3 loops of wire at bottom, middle

and top held by 3 strings to be fastened to the top structures and suspended.

The tube should pass thru the middle, with perforation where the water will

contact the roots. There should be room for the water to then pass thru

outside the tube back into the fishwater, which it is suspended over.

I think I'll start the plants at the bottom and add every 2 weeks more

about 15'' above. I'm not sure if I'll need perlite or some such thing to

anchor the roots. I need to find the right tubing, the right solar pump and

battery, the right heavy plastic to cover the trenches, and clear plastic to

cover the greenhouse.

Finally, I'll need to buy the fish, fishfood, and maybe some monitoring

devices, a timer for the pump, get my seedlings prepared. I hope that's it.

The city of Oakland is sending over some people from the park and rec. to

look at it, because, you probably know, I am hoping to be a model of low-cost

aquaponics so that others will do it everywhere (schools, institutions, and

individuals) so that we can start creating community food security,

self-reliance, cheap quality protein sources and all that good stuff, with

y2k being the spur. Does it all make sense?

                                                            Love ya all,

Those plans from Mississippi State are very nice. I've built most of the

greenhouses

they have plans for over the years. The gothic arch and the tri-penta are very

simple and work well for a first project. The tri-penta can also be built using

stove bolts and conduit with only a hand drill if you want one which can be

disassembled and moved easily. I know of 2 examples where people use that

set-up at

apartments. With permission from the landlord, that is...

I'd be glad to pick up extra copies and send them to people on list if needed.

Jim

Hmm... I made my greenhouse using no plans, $60.00 of clear plastic, and

$50 worth of timber. Still standing to this day.... for just $110.
