Hi all,

I came across some interesting software used to help setup a fish pond. It

seems to cover all areas. Check it out and download it free.

Mr Creaser, my number is ++876 9833829, please call me when in Xaymaca

(jamaica land of wood and water...)

To the group... its funny when we islanders see by the server extension

a fellow islander on "our" newsgroup...well since last week David

Atkinson and I finally caught up per phone and met tonight and have been

chatting here till now after 1 am!!

The biggest joke is guys.... he lives just 5 minutes down the road from

me!! :) We had a great time.. aquapondering...

Who to tell maybe that shy neighbour is really a lurking aquaponic freak

like yourself?? I was really amused to realise we were so close..

In fact, Mr. Creaser and others, if ever in Jamaica, please contact

either of us, we would like to drive down together and visit you on this

farm, also for those interested in consulting, training etc.

Voluntary work anyone.. ;)

Joyous Aquaponikering!!

(Love your neighbour as yourself cuz you never know if he's the netpal

on your newsgroup???... or how did it go??)

Smile......

I grow brandy's everyyear...its a fussy critter..too much, not enuf

soil moisture, the fruit splits or blossom end rot..It is worth growing

as the taste is superb.....One thing tho it isnt so much the lineage of

a plant that determines its taste..It's more the growing conditions,

nutrients available..Ive grown lousy tasting brandies, and ones that

were very sweet, it's all in the soil(or in this forum -fish poop&

associated biota) The plants w/ sprawl BIGTIME iff lots of root space,

so be prepared to thin, and trellis them ..In my case one plant every 4

feet is enuf

I have used a variety from "Totally Tomatoes" called "Presto" with good

success. The fruit are medium-sized, uniformly colored and nice, round

shaped - very good for fresh markets. This variety is intended for

greenhouse use only, and does not do well outside.

Here is a problem I hit with the FDA. It may pertain to fish also that are

living in water where the plants are grown.

I recently learned the herbal supplements

I use to keep my toxin-sensitive rhea chicks alive are not approved for use

in food animals by the FDA. I am having to submit the questionable items of

the feed formula for review. Since we are a minor species with a

particularly bad mortality problem (80-100%) they feel the items I mentioned

on the phone should not be a problem.

The US Dietary Supplement Act does not extend to animals. I mistakenly

assumed this act extended to animals and had designed a supplement to

provide liver support which I intended to sell to the rhea growers. I am

having to get approval to use milk thistle seeds, dandelion, Echinacea,

goldenseal, the same supplement I can sell for humans, insect protein, grape

seed extract, and other high quality antioxidants found in human

formulations but not feed formulas. Even then we will be restricted to a

long withdrawal time if they get approved at all. Furthermore,

intentionally planting the flora in the bird pens would be in violation of

the feed laws.

I am in the process of starting up a small aquaponics facility. I was

wondering if anyone out there is growing medicinal herbs or alternative

crops such as aloe-vera, jojoba etc. Can you tell me how they do in this

type of system.

Is there a reason besides aesthetics you want to get rid of the algae.

Tilapia will feed off of it. U.V.I> has been developing a system that uses

greenwater ( algae ) and have had spectacular results . I on the other hand

have been trying to get algae to grow in my tanks especially the fry tanks.

There is an article in the Volume 5 #1 ( dec98 / Jan 99 ) issue of

Aquaponics magazine about growing medicinal herbs in an Aquaponic setup.

they list Aloe , Angelica , Echinachea, Feverfew, mint, St. John's Wart,

Yarrow as growable in an aquaponics setup.

Oh boy what about free range rhea's? AAAre yo usaying that this is a

nono?..... THat a buerokrat inspecting your farm would say to you, "get

those "unapproved"weeds outa that pasture!?..I can understand their

caution (vaguely)if you market this product to others, but, to deny

your birds to "freerange" on your pasture(adulterated or not) is absurd,

unless of course they had an appetite for "datura"(jimson weed) or other

like"possible forage". Keep up the battle

Prolly, depending on the herb, but, only in rare instance IMO.

Many essential oils good at killing stuff but then your not exactly

grinding up the herbs and mixing them intho the water.

I would wager tho that in many instances a longer drain fill cycle

time would be in order as many herbs make much more essential oil-if

that's your goal- when stressed, even then I dont believe it would be

expressed in a "root exudate" into the water.

Can only answer for the echinacea as far as our experience goes, and we did

not have entire systems mono-cropping it. It was planted in the same system

with other herbs, greens and fruiting crops. Never noticed any difference

in the system performance that would indicate a bacterial lessening.

Did you have any other specific medicinals in mind?

It works okay at my end. You'll need to cut and paste the address or type it

in directly. It's a great program that will calculate everything I could

think of.

It even allows you to project the fish weight when given the type, food

quanity, and enviroment. Try it again.

The url is correct and appears to be located at a school, so perhaps if down
