Thanks Adriana,

I just found out from the local tilapia supplier that fortunately there

aren't regs here (surprisingly). I guess the bureaucrats realize theyd

never survive a CO winter. But I'm leaning towards doing some nodes at

least with trout. I've been worried about keeping the tilapia warm enough

(we're already getting freezes overnight here), whereas the trout loves the

cold - just have to make sure the greenhouse never gets too warm in the

summer I guess. Maybe if we cross the breed we can get a "snow bird" fish

that likes canadian summers and florida winters!!!

Did you get the email I sent directly to your email address?

thanks again,

Jewel

trout and tilapia at? We're real cold and high in the Rockies. What

I don't know if this helps, but there are a couple of companies selling

submersed ozone generators that are used to purify well water in storage

tanks. Let me know if you'd like more info.

Hi!

Browns and rainbows on the trout question.

Climate here is a bit worse than in the Rockies - long cold winters of about

15 degrees average and

snow that we shovel down to our doors off the roof sometimes - serious "lake

effect snows" off lake

Just a quick survey - what is most successful in your aquaponic system and

where is the best

source of seeds for what you are growing??? We want to diversify our

Hello Adriana,

I transplanted mine into the Solo cups, one in each corner of the styrofoam

box and one in the center. I cut a nickle or quarter size hole in the cup

bottom, pushed the roots through, and added just enough perlite to support

the lettuce. Anything you have would work to keep the direct sunlight away

from the roots and add some support too. A smaller drinking cup would

probally work better as their isn't any roots in the cup.

Oh, the box I have are vented so I added a clear plastic liner, drapping the

excess plastic over the out sides and taping it down. A piece of rag or felt

1" X 6" was pushed through the bottom of each cup to wick up the water and

help get the plant started.

Have fun, Joel

By Fish DO I meant dissolved oxygen for the fish. Within the last 2 months

someone on the list offered help in building an inexpensive ozone generator

but I can't find who. Any help would be appreciated.

My system here in Panama City, Florida is coming together. Grow beds will

be finished by Sunday, Fish tank is in the ground, and the State Ag

inspector is due here Tuesday to check & issue permit (I hope). Rest of

greenhouse should complete in a week or so.

I can think of some things that might work, but does anyone know the effects

of ozonated water on the fish? Ozone isn't just regular oxygen, its got

that free radical molecule that jumps off and oxidizes things. That would

be great if it was good for the fish. But in any case, here's one idea for

a simple cheap system. Some ozone systems use UV lights (sometimes called

"blacklights"). You can find the florescent UV tubes all over, I've seen

them at some walmarts, and you can get a complete 18" unit with fixture from

those Spencer gift shops that are in most big malls. It would just be a

matter of putting it into a little box, then using an aquarium air pump to

take the air from there, and bring it into the water as usual. You could

even get your fish some cool '60's blacklight posters and they can have a

party!

Good luck with your permit.

Aquaponikers,

The group effort os sharing a site is a wonderful idea. It will grow

leaps and bounds and add greatly to the current forum with the emphasis

on visual (jpeg's) and archiving? no doubt. Plus history is showing that

these communal efforts are just what we need.

Good luck to us all.......

I have no problem with making additions to our site - it's due for revisions

anyway. And then the system pictures/links would be in the same location as

the aquaponics mail group is promoted. If one of you has the technical

know-how, let me know and we'll see what we can get worked out. Otherwise,

I'll talk to our local ISP "wizards" and have them do it.
