I'm sure that $2000 will disappear quickly, but there is always another grant!

Thanks,

The obvious reason this happened is that they thought they could do this

forever because of their economic impact in the area.

Like most businesses, unfortunately, you have to force them to devise ways

to use their waste. The recovery on the investment takes a long time, and

they want to avoid the capital expenditure. Had it been designed originally

to deal with the waste and the cost built in to the infrastructure

development, the impact would have been minimal.

Mike - do you plan to experiment with/demonstrate all three systems within

the one greenhouse? Could you give a quick summary of your other facilities

and their operations? I'd think a side-by-side comparison of the three

forms of growing would be invaluable, especially with sufficient "staff" to

keep up with the stats.

Let us know what your primary plans are, and the expected space required for

each, and maybe we can make some suggestions more in line with your actual

goals. I'd think massive amounts of equipment would be the last items to

buy, especially if you have equipment that could be retrofitted to the new

facility. If not, then perhaps minimum equipment required to evaluate the

three systems could be bought/rigged up for the $2000 you mention.

Hello,

I think an interesting addition would be an internet presence where you could

share your work with other schools and groups. Computer cameras have gotten

so cheap and I'm sure you could find a local service to donate the internet

connection and setup service for free banner space. The kids probaly want to

see other schools at work and to be seen by others. Simple pictures taken

and displayed daily would go a long way toward opening your school up for

more many grants too.

I think for teaching purposes it would be good to have several

independent systems with small aquarium pumps to use for experiments

such as to compare growth between aquaponic vs. hydroponic vs. organic

nutrients. You could test new-fangled equipment this way using one bed

as a control and another to try things out like adding silicon, liquid

CO2 formulas, Quantumponics, etc. Then you could report the results

back to us and we would be so grateful that when we make our aquaponic

millions we'll give your school a grant:>)...

Hi Mike,

Quantumponics is a magnetic plant growth stimulator which is touted to

increase yield and product stronger, heathier, less insect prone

plants. One of our list members is trying a unit out with two tomato

plants and has seen significant differences between the quantum plants

and the control. The plants have yet to produce fruit, which for

tomatoes is the ultimate test. For more information see:

http://quantumponics.iinet.net.au/index.html

Oh, one other piece of equipment you need is a good sprayer.

Hi Everyone,

I have recently come upon some MAJOR new advances for hydroponics that =

most of the group will probably be quite interested in. The most =

outstanding is an electronic device that allows your plants to uptake =

more water and nutrient, potentially doubling yield. I've put up info =

(and pics) on a friends website (I'm sorry I don't have a picture =

shrinking program, so the pics take a while to load). It covers those, =

and a couple of other links for things I've come across that you may =

find helpful (like super cheap greenhouses). If you're interested, go to =

 For more information see:

If you have limited resources for your system, you may want to screen the

methods to be tested and determine the basis for the claims. As an

example, your could have the students analyze the claims seen below from

the Quantumponics web site. They could research what "magnetic

concentrations" are and how a "burst of a Quantum field" might help their

plants grow. They could search quantum physics sites on the internet and

hypothesize which "mysterious sub-particle field" is generated by the

QuantumPONICS units.

Other equipment could be considered like The Advanced Bio-Photon Integrator

at http://www.nhtrust.com

or they could read the Radionics Manual and learn how to use Scanners and

Cosmic Pipes including the new Left-Handed Scanners to "detox

animals/soils, build fertilizer for you soil & seed, treat

insects/fields.weeds".

Or you could use these sites to teach a class in critical thinking. Mike

Miller

"In our solar system, the sun creates Quantum fields. At any given time

there are 50,000 magnetic concentrations in the sun and every time they

collide there is a burst of a Quantum field. The temperatures are

tremendous, from 11,000 degrees up to 3 million.

The same principle exists in our QuantumPONICS units for hydroponics. After

ten years of hydroponic research (as well as other research), we can now

guarantee that it works. Now you can give your hydroponic plants extra

"life force" like they would get from the sun. This mysterious sub-particle

field generated by our QuantumPONICS units can be added to any hydroponics

system."

Hi Jewel,

Looked at the info you've put on the website. As I said when you first

mentioned it, this sounds like a great project and I hope it works out.

I can't comment on the nutrient conditioning device you recommend as I

haven't used it.

However, bearing in mind the stated aims of your project, I'm a little

puzzled as to why you're considering using the "smart valve" systems you

show. At nearly 10USD per square foot (including feed lines, connectors

etc) this seems a fairly pricey way of going about things. For this kind

of money I would expect quite a lot more from a system than merely

keeping the roots damp (or have I missed something?). In a reasonably

large greenhouse, is the benefit of being able to match uptake

accurately over such small areas really worthwhile if you can't track

any of the other parameters as accurately over these areas? It also

seems somewhat limiting in terms of being able to use the nutrient for

thermal protection etc. and that you will need a number of additional

systems to deal with this and other things such as EC/PH, atmospheric

control, water management... each working with little regard for what

the others are doing.

IMHO, if you have this amount of money to spend, you could be far better

off investing in computer control at the start. I don't see anything in

the system you describe that couldn't be done at least as well this way

and for less cost. Once you have your controller, installing additional

subsystems to manage other aspects of your entire setup shouldn't be too

difficult. The most important thing, as I see it, is that you can make

these systems work together, giving you something far better than the

sum of the benefits gained from several devices operating independently.

I don't intend to be critical of the equipment you mention - I'm sure

it's very good - I just wonder if it's really the best for what you are

trying to do. I intend no real critisism of your plan either - you are,

after all, the man on the spot and know a lot more about the subject tha

n myself anyway. Just a few thoughts.

Forgot to ask - where does your filtration, nitrate removal etc for the

fishwater occur? If you're only using the runoff from the fish tank as a

nutrient source for your plants, aren't you missing out on one of the

main benefits offered by aquaponics - the bioremediation offered by the

plants?

Sorry if I've misunderstood your plans.
