Thanks, Vik

Since I'm already the Queen of Aphids I'll consider myself warned. It's

interesting how different plants attract different aphids. My mustards

and arugula get green ones, yellow ones were attracted to the purslane

and I rarely see the black ones.

What type of garlic did you use for "seed"? I assume you started with

sets?

Would you share with us how you're growing your strawberries and what

type of yields you're getting?

Paula

Do you seed crops like lettuce and basil directly into your pea gravel ?

Solved my pumping problems and gas water heaters being installed Thursday,

so I'm maybe a week away from fish.

I have recently tried to germinate spinach for a floating raft system but

have had dismal results regarding the germination rate. I switched to

distilled water but saw no improvement. I have read of spinach seed

treatments that work well but require chemicals that are not readily

available and are expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions for spinach

seed germination treatments that are relatively simple yet effective. TIA

for any suggestions.

First off, I'm not a commercial grower; I'm experimenting with crops

suitable for use on the Earth's moon, believe it or not. Sanity rating

0.75 . I've been growing for less than a year and it's just a small

garden of about 100 large plants in total (see the website under

Launchpad). I think you ought to know that first.

Around here the garlic comes in two types, white and pink. Most of it is

grown by Chinese market gardeners, and I just bought a bag of the white

garlic and used that. Not very scientific but I'm at the

proof-of-concept stage.

The strawberries have been deliberately grown in reduced light levels

and temperature, so they're not going to get a good yeild. Also they've

yet to finish their first season so it's too soon to tell (still more

green ones than red ones). I'm growing them in a chip bed to make

propogation easier; next year the main crop will be grown in NFT runs

and some ceramic containers which most would call decorative but which I

think may be able to be constructed from local lunar materials.

So...in order to qualify for your project the plants have to be "out of

this world"? I assume you're familar with NASA's Controlled Ecological

Life Support Systems studies of various plants?

Adriana

The sanity rating is good...makes for good cocktail party

conversation...

I am interested in sources of "organic" fish food as well as how or what to

grow as fish feed.

Also could use info on sources for making or buying an indoor smaller

aquapoonics system.

Thank you

I have watercress that is still growing in northern Illinois My talpia

love it, they sort of graze on it and I give them much less ( food) . If any

one wants some let me know now I can still send some . E-mail me off list

and I can send some, when you put it in a pond or? it grows well.

Hmmm

Well my new wife was out helping me clean up the Koi pond a few weeks ago

and she pulled up and removed all traces of my watercress that grows around

the waterfall. Which has taught me not to let her near the garden :) or

heavens forbid in the greenhouse unattended.

Anyways whenever my Tilapia seem to be not feeding as well I give them a big

bunch of watercress and it stimulates their appetite.

Not sure what in the watercress is the factor that acts like a stimulant.

Ron - You might try germinating spinach in cool location. Spinach is a

cooler weather crop. I have a friend who tried to grow spinach in his

rockwool NFT lettuce system but it was too warm in the greenhouse.

Aloha,

I saw mention of something else the talapia like to eat better then

watercress but I can't seem to remember what it was? Could someone repost

this? I am trying to find something I can grow to feed the fish instead of

importing feed.

Aloha,

Kevin
