To the list - received the following inquiry from John Greer - Thought I
would repost to the list the earlier comments we had on perlite and
potential for clogging from solids. BTW - John has a system set up in his
high school ag program.

John - Tom comments that perlite can clog from solids, resulting in poor
drainage. Earlier posts follow.

questions and to tap you're additional expertise re: perlite. I use this
extensively in my pot tomato and pepper etc etc culture. It has wonderful
properties. I was however informed that over time in such a setting that
perlite will continue to compact. Not a problem for one-season crops, but a
potential big problem for multi year crops[roses]. With that warning, I
talked to manufacturers of the stuff looking for larger size[ pebble size
and up] and was told that if I needed a train car load they would do it
special. I am still with out any as I grow only 200 rose plants. Any
thoughts? Any volcanic products from the West? Same concerns ; costs and
shipping to Pennsylvania. Thank you all once again George Kunkel

I've not reposted Donald Trotter's earlier long post on perlite, but can if
any of you have missed it.

I called the number given in the list. Wrong number. I called
information. No listing statewide for Horus Botanicals. I would like to
contact this company. Please supply current info. As an aside, I have
found that too frequently e-mail addresses, web site addresses, phone
numbers, etc. are not current when supplied over the net. It would be
such a nice courtesy to check these out before distributing them to
hundreds of people. It would save frustration and unnecessary phone
charges. Thanks. Gail Hall, Tender Greens

To date the only archives are the files I've been retaining here. I've
tried to follow the threads and place items in appropriate files so all this
wonderful information is not lost. If you have a specific subject area, I'd
be glad to check back through the posts.

As soon as I can find one of those "round toit"s everyone's always talking
about, I will get into town to the office of our ISP. Kathy will give me
instructions on how to add archives onto our web site so that they'll be
accessible.

And Miekal, please do post an introduction. I don't know how many of our
members are growing "passionflowers, acacias, medicinals, aloes, gotu kola
etc, & other ethnobotanicals that can handle a low temp of 55 & all would
flourish in temps of 70-80", but I'll bet you would generate some
interesting conversations.

Gail - sorry for the problem - the info I gave the list was from my computer
card file (which I mistyped), not the hand-written list Tom makes his calls
from, anthough even his listing was incorrect since they've changed area
codes. I apologize for any problems this may have caused.

We've just spoken to Blaine at Horus, and confirmed the following information:

No internet access as yet, but they'd be happy to talk with you and/or send
a catalog of plants and seeds.

Subject: introduction
From: John Greer

To the group,
My name is John Greer. I am an agriculture instructor in Pleasant Hope
Mo. I have a background in dairy and beef cattle and crop production.
Somehow I end up at a school with a greenhouse 5 years ago. Since that
time I have come to greatly enjoy horticulture and now have built an
additional greenhouse that houses an entire aquaponic system like the
one at S&S aquafarm. For a farm boy that has never had a horticulture
class in his life I am learning fast. I never thought I would be
involved in horticulture of any kind. And I sure never thought it would
be my favorite thing to teach.

What I am really interested in is seeds and plants that work well in
both a conventional 22 X 48 greenhouse and a nonconventional aquaponics
system.

With working with high school students we get the chance to kill plants
at an alarming rate for one reason or another. We also have a chance to
discover strange things that I never thought I would see.

Each year in my conventional greenhouse we grow impatiens, begonias,
various hanging baskets and other bedding plants. Then in the spring we
sell these plants here to community members. Now that we have the new
aquaponics lab we also grow these same plants in there. Usually using
them as stock plants for cuttings. Some do well and some not so well.
The ones that do well seem to grow and reproduce faster than we can keep
up. For example yeaterday we took 550 cuttings in one class period that
have grown since the 10th of December. Now I have impatiens running out
of my ears in the middle of January. Oh well better than everything
dying I suppose.

Well I don't want to bore everyone so I'll sign off.

If I can be of any help let me know.

Thanks

John Greer
