Just thought I'd update everyone on my fish woes...

Actually, right now there are very few "woes". My ammonia level has fallen
to less tan 1.0ppm (This tells me that my bacteria is taking hold in the
gravel bed). My Nitrite level is still too high, between 1.0 and 2.0ppm,
although I haven't had any fish mortality since Wednesday April 4, and the
fish are looking much stronger. DO is still steady at about 8.0ppm. pH is
around 7.0-7.2. Water temperature is steady at about 78F. The fish are
eating well.

I changed the way that my return water sparys into the fish tank because the
fish (IMO) were swimming themselves to death, never getting to relax because
of the strong current. Instead of spraying in at about a 45 degree angle, I
have changed the nozzle to 90 degrees, and the water sprays in almost
straight down, although I left a bit of a turn in the connection to make a
small amount of counter-clockwise current.

Here's an off the wall question...anybody know where I can get banks of LED
lights? I was reading a NASA story
(http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2001/ast09apr_1.htm?list47198) about
growing plants in space and saw that they use LEDs to provide the necessary
light for the plants. Sounded really cool!

All done rambling for now.

Devon, here is a possible source for LED lights. Most of the later model =
cars and suv's are using led's for the high mounted stop lamps. Some =
models have up to 40 led's in the assembly. An inexpensive source could =
be junk yards. They are also designed to work on 12 volts, so a small =
solar unit could power them. Only drawback is they are usually red. Hope =
this helps..

You can obtain these now in Super Bright and Ultra Super Bright types. They are arranged in small clusters or grids for maximum effectiveness. They are so bright you cannot look at them, and very little power consumption, with very little heat generated. I am just at an "experimenter stage", so cannot help to much on this. I obtained mine from a british company that distributes all over the world. They do almost exactly the same range of items as the US "Radio Shack" company. The supplier I use is "RS Components". Their website gives a host of technical info on all their products, including these LED 'at' s, although you will have to register to access the technical library ( free) http://www.rswww.com/ Can 'at' t help on the Radio Shack site Steve H | Message 9 Subject: FW: Grow Bed Media sanitizing & clarifier From: "Hurst, Steve ( China)" Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 03:08:32 +0100 Hi Paula, Not sure about being able to obtain the Hydrogen Peroxide, but its another solution to look out for. As this is my first trial node, I plan on experimenting anyway. The cheapest solutions that have been suggested are Sun Baking and Boiling, so I am going to give these a shot. If it works, saves money for the future. >Steve - I don't know if you can obtain 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide >there or not, but it is the safest to use -- after its initial reactive >stage, it is harmless in your system. We have a US supplier, but I've not >looked into international suppliers. Whether to use a Clarifier or not seems to be one of the more difficult decisions to make. Reading Ted 'at' s reply it looks like it depends a great deal on where the balance is between your Fish Production, and your Vegetable production. Ron has had experience with this particular type of media and has had the pore surface clog when not using a filter. It looks like there are several variables here that I will have to consider. Reading your last reply ref getting the system up and running is another point to consider. As this is a trial node I am going to make it as flexible as I can. My intention is to build the system with the ability to add or remove the Clarifier as necessary. That way I could get it started without the clarifier, and a few fish from the, pond , then when the gravel bed is established, and the fish stocking densities have been increased, see the effect of adding and removing the Clarifier, on the plants, gravel bed and the water quality. >As to a clarifier, you'll need to make that call for yourself; but I think >you'd be increasing the amount of time it takes to get your system >functioning.
