Ok Carolyn.

Sounds like you pretty much know what you want. I would suggest this
plan of action.

Stop the frogs from getting into your poind area.
Continue skimming for eggs and trash
 or do the following
 Get a
shipping barrel, one with a "clamping ring" it can be one of the blue
drums that some chemicals come in
just make sure it is clean of
residue. Cut out three holes on the side of the drum or whatever is
aesthetically pleasing to you
. clamp in a fine sheet old curtain over
the top of the drum by placing it over the mouth of the drum and giving
it a 2 foot "belly" into the drum.

Alternatively, a rig that Bruce suggested but the support modified by me
is, use four pieces of 1/2 rebar steel about 4 feet long and twist a
binding wire at around the 18 inch mark so that the steel bars can be
splayed to make a rough inverted square pyramid
 ( think of an inverted
square tent/tipi
) and then place an old sheet over it. Wrap where the
sheet covers the "legs" with binding wire so that it will not tear th
sheet.

Float or support your pump intake so the the inlet hose is under the
surface by about 18 inches
the vortex created here should be strong
enough to suck the eggs with it
the first time you do this you may
need to "vacuum" those nesting sites.
Hook up your gas pump , pump the pond water through either the drum rig
or the sheet filter and observe. Watch what type of scum you find and
whether the eggs are being removed
. and whether this saves you time by
screening out your eggs and trash. Empty either filter or throw entire
rag away by just removing the clamp on the drum and going
.!!Basta.
I think there are some frog screens that are basically a foot high edge
that stops the frogs from jumping over it
try using a foot wide edging
of shadecloth or any such material
by the length needed to surround
your swimming hole.Just keep this up a few days. Shoo out all frogs
before putting up the barrier. You may have to go out in the evening as
these animals are nocturnal.

So much for the frogs/tadpoles/tad's poo

 I learnt something cuz I
didnt know tadpoles pooed
. but thats another story
.lol.

I think your terraced pool idea is good. Use the excess liner you have
to create this effect if your soil type isnt conducive to holding water.
fill these with the plants you mentioned creating the desired effect. If
you want to keep the frogs at bay
. make only SMALL indentations in the
gravel where you want these guys to hang out. Landscape the bogs as you
desire. IMHO, leave the bog nearest to the "top"
.furthest from the
reentry to the pool open till the system is running. fill this one
moderately with gravel. If you need to adjust ph later you can always
add some limestone rocks to this pool to buffer the ph. Use the pump you
have set out, taking water from the common area, maybe the swimming area
to keep this area's water changed as often as possible and pump to the
channel you mention. Let the water cascade, and trickle down through the
plants and beds. AS said
a trick to do if you dont want that much
activity in terms of aquatic animals is to keep the recirculating flow
low as to keepo the water BELOW the gravel line
 let the water cascade
in a mini water at least once or twice
. gurgling is good for
relaxation
makes you just wanna pee in the bath water and draw for a
cool drink
 oops sorry

I hope that by removing the scum and eggs now you will have cleaned up
the next generation of frogs from coming
.just be consistent in your
attack! Change the filters as needed for the startup and discard the
scum. It could be argued to do this after the building but my idea here
is to get rid of a potential "later" problem, namely the new frogs.

I am using a similar approach as you in my hatchery design in regard to
solar. I will be using a solar panel to charge a battery "tops", then
use a solar pump to move water around the hatchery when the utility
power fails. I will backup by using a solenoid that will trip to injet
oxygen into my tanks
or maybe after layout, I will find that the DO is
fine after spraying back my water into the tanks who knows??

In your case you can use solar power to move up to a thousand gallons
the hour with a good sump or bilge pump (12v)
!! This way your
wetlands and constantly primed with water. Bear in mind to that these
pumps can pump well only at heads of about 4 feet! There are special
built high head solar pumps but I am basing this statement on a
run-of-the-DIY store bilge pump from the boating section of a good
store.

I can only restate
you will be DELIGHTED with the clear water that you
will get. And, what is gonna stop you from putting a good liquid
fertiliser into your pond water to get it kickstarted? Im sure you could
decide once a month for example to shower "from the drum" of stored
pumped pond water, while you add a little "boost-me-up
. brand x" nutri
juice??

That too is possible so I dont think your plants or yourself need to
worry. Btw, as a side bar
. it is said that our forefathers didnt bathe
as much as we do
. and that too often bathing with all sort of soaps
actually INCREASES the risk of feminine probs, skin odors, and the
likes. I believe after studying first hand what happens in
biofiltration, that too frequent washing could kill beneficial skin
bacteria. Just a sidebar
.:> hehehehhe, yes I admit, before anyone
asks
a cool wash off just with water DOES alternate in my washing
rituals.
Have a restful rest day to all
(but do have one!! :> )

Mike
JAMAICA

PS.
Think also of using ducks to get rid of the tadpoles, and they can be
eaten

yummy
.!! Or you could borrow some from someone and return
them later?? :> Duckweed can be used to shade ponds and keep out the
algae from all the uncovered areas of water.

Bear in mind that water exposed to the sun will grow algae! provided
there is a minimum of nutrients to sustain growth. Think carefully about
whether or not you want to expose more water surface than you are
willing to have (tadpoles :>) in or willig to treat for algae, think
about subsurface flow through those bogs of yours
 cascade water for
sounds and oxygen but in your design
.plan OUT the things you dont want
or have the time to deal with
in this case skimming scum or clearing
algae

Shallow water is not bad but even shallow NONMOVING water is bad
.!!

Just a few afterthoughts

What happened to Wendy? Is she no longer on the list. She is the lady who
identified this "damned" carp I have in my pond. She is/was a tremendous
resource person.

I believe Wendy Ngurny (?) who used to participate on this list
regularly had and loved Pacu in her University research tanks

Steve, check out this website. You thought that the catfish was big. You
probably would not grow your Pacu's this large for marketing, but what
fillets they would make.

Jim, In the Aquaponic system desing manual available from the Freshwater
Institute,(West Virginia) they operate the pumps to the gravel beds only
durring the day time. However, they use air pumps for airation 24 hrs a day.
I would suggest that as long as provision is made for airation that the
on-off thing would work. Prehaps providing a bypass with a shower effect on
the main pump that would be activated durring the night, and placing the
pump on a timer for the night would do the trick. Maybe this would keep the
water warmer in the winter also?? Just a thought.

Mike,

To say that was inspiring was an understatement indeed!!!! I'm taking off
to get a private behind the scenes tour of an abalone farm south of Big Sur
along the central California coast. Yea, riding a BMW along the coast is
rough but someone has to do it
. If the photos come out decent I'll post
them. Even though this is pure marine aquaculture it is related to the field
of aquaponics. Here is the site for the AB farm for those land locked and
those with coastal access to attempt this
. http://www.abalonefarm.com/
Enjoy this Sunday!

after all it is a regulary stocked item on fish store shelves!

Great shots.

This site appears to be located to the east of the
Philipinnes in the Mariannas Islands. This includes Saipan and Guam.
These Islands are still under the USA I beleive.
A lot of Philipino 'at' s live and work there.

Boy that was an eyeful, doesn't anybody know how to edit

Ive a different url and take on the big C.
bille

.( link below)
"The 1931 Nobel laureate in medicine, German Otto Warburg, Ph.D., first
discovered that cancer cells have a fundamentally different energy
metabolism compared to healthy cells. The crux of his Nobel thesis was that
malignant tumors frequently exhibit an increase in anaerobic glycolysis--a
process whereby glucose is used as a fuel by cancer cells with lactic acid
as an anaerobic byproduct--compared to normal tissues.1 The large amount of
lactic acid produced by this fermentation of glucose from cancer cells is
then transported to the liver. This conversion of glucose to lactate
generates a lower, more acidic pH in cancerous tissues as well as overall
physical fatigue from lactic acid buildup.2,3 Thus, larger tumors tend to
exhibit a more acidic pH.4

This inefficient pathway for energy metabolism yields only 2 moles of
adenosine triphosphate (ATP) energy per mole of glucose, compared to 38
moles of ATP in the complete aerobic oxidation of glucose. By extracting
only about 5 percent (2 vs. 38 moles of ATP) of the available energy in the
food supply and the body's calorie stores, the cancer is "wasting" energy,
and the patient becomes tired and undernourished. This vicious cycle
increases body wasting.5 It is one reason why 40 percent of cancer patients
die from malnutrition, or cachexia.6

Hence, cancer therapies should encompass regulating blood-glucose levels via
diet, supplements, non-oral solutions for cachectic patients who lose their
appetite, medication, exercise, gradual weight loss and stress reduction.
Professional guidance and patient self-discipline are crucial at this point
in the cancer process. The quest is not to eliminate sugars or carbohydrates
from the diet but rather to control blood glucose within a narrow range to
help starve the cancer and bolster immune function. "

 ANTI-PERSPIRANT. Most of the products
out there are an anti-perspirant/deodorant combination, so go home and
check.

Frank, et. al.,

I'm trying to be good and not post any messages that have the potential of
negative rebuttal, BUT, you got to be SH

me and all of us with this!
Breast cancer is a very serious and very personal tragedy, but I doubt
seriously that it is caused by underarm deodorant. Men use under-arm
deodorant and many of us have fatty tissue in our breast, but we don't get
breast cancer. European women don't, as a rule, use under-arm deodorant and
they still get Breast Cancer.

Frank, I really appreciate your Pacu post, but you are stretching with this
one.
