Sorry it takes so long for me to reply, but that darn speed of light limit
still has me stumped, sending posts to you from out here in the Asteroid
Belt. Glad I got my Coleman stove with me. You think Moscow's cold? or
Frost Bite Falls? Me and Rocky are darn chilly out here. Darn tootin'!

Here are some iron-ic thoughts from some real smart fellers there on your
planet:

"Depends upon how much iron and how much volume. Oxidize it to Fe+3 and at
normal pH it will precipitate out as Fe(OH)3 in the form of a hydrated gel.
The trick then is to remove the precipitate. At low flow rates, just let
it settle. At higher flowrates, things like dense bed reactors,
floculation systems with sludge recycle, etc. will give high performance
per unit volume."

"Try this cheap method
.It may be good enough. Run your water through a
good packed column
.one that will bring you to 90% saturation or better,
and then pass the oxygenated water through a coarse sand filter so the
floculate can "coat" the sand. Be prepared to change sand as frequently as
needed. Use the sand elsewhere (driveway) as its cheaper than trying to
chemically remove the iron from the sand."

"Drip irrigation people also has problems and posible answers -
don't know if it is the same type of iron
try:"

www.netafim.com/netafim/dows/Serve/item/English/1.1.10.1.html

Well, there's some help from some of your better earthlings. My suggestion
is maybe trap the iron precipitates onto gravel and grow plants in the
gravel. Let the plant roots and bacteria do their thing. See what happens.
What a concept.

Tedmoose.

Adriana , Thanks for the information. I can give you a summary of what
I have done to get the iron out of my well water or if you have a
particular problem we could discuss that. My problem was that as soon
as the water came out of the well and combined with air, rust appeared.
The rust Cloged faucets and stained the bath tub, sinks, toilet etc

The water also tasted rusty, but was safe to drink. I tried a water
softner but it cloged up in about two months. Fortunately it was second
hand and did not cost much. I also used what they call whole house
filters they cloged up,quickly and I was changing filters often. I tried
to wash the filters to save money. Even with this we still got too much
rust. To save space i will sumarize what I found to work. I installed
a chlorinating pump, it chlorinated the water(suspended the rust). That
was a good deal the rust didnt stick to the plumbing fixtures. But that
was not enough, still had red water. What finished the job was a filter
that removes the rust and can be flushed out when needed. that is what
I made myself and almost anyone else can also make or have made if they
want or need to. If any of this is of use to anyone or you let me know
and I will pass on more details. My filter can be made larger if
needed. I got some ideas by searching the internet, and my own trial &
errors. Bill B.

Have a Great Day

Hello all,

I am planning on setting up a small home system, well apartment system to be
exact. This will most likely be using a 75 gallon fish tank running a
2'x5'x1' bed.

I was curious if there was any one else in the Vancouver, B.C. are that had
an established system. It would be nice to see a working system prior to
sinking money into one. I guess I am a member of the age old seeing is
believing club :).

Thank you for any assistance.

Thomas - just finally was able to pull up your resource site. It's
interesting to see the directions others take in their research efforts, and
it's a very resourceful site. Thanks for the links to our pages and the
mail group.

The aquaculture links page brought forth some links we hadn't seen before,
especially some resources on freshwater shrimp. Thanks for those.

You might want to include the actual subscribe instructions for the
aquaponics mail group. Anyone sending a message to aquaponics 'at' townsqr.com
without first joining will just get a reject from the auto-responder.
Instructions are:

An e-mail discussion group has been formed - an open list specifically for
aquaponics - the combined systems of aquaculture and hydroponics. All who
are interested in learning and sharing information about this and related
topics are invited to participate.

The one aquaponics link that has me perplexed is the aquaponic.com (not to
be confused with aquaponics.com which is the site for the Aquaponics Journal
and related activities). The Aquaponic.com site has a tilapia photo for
background, and shows some set-ups that appear to be connected to
fish-raising systems, but nowhere in their write-ups do I find anything that
indicates they combine aquaculture with hydroponics --just lots of
hydro-related supplies. Am I missing something on that site? They also
don't really state who and where they are -- just an email and phone
contact. Has anyone had any dealings with this company

just curious.

Geoff,

There's probably a couple hundred indoor gardens in B.C. but, you'll
probably never see one. Try your local gro-light store or do a search for
B.C grow lights.

What I am really hoping for is to see an operational Aquaponics system.
There is a wealth of information on hydroponics but the combination of
aquatics and hydroponics would appear to have some key differences.

Thank you for your input however.

Your local gro-light store will have more than one small system up and
running for you to look at.
